Hi,
Glad to be here blogging.

I did a post on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 with the title
History of Madelia and Northfield, Minnesota with Jesse James Gang in old Newspaper
Maybe you read it. Maybe not.

Maybe the town in lower Minnesota is not unknown to you readers. Actually I am not familiar within the town either only the location which is lower than the twin cities and a bit west of the great Mississippi river. . And a bit of stuff here and there one learns about a town in one's home region. I thought I would take a few minutes more to mention the book MORE THAN A DREAM written by Lauraine Snelling that features the town of Northfield. She has a series of books about the Norwegian immigrants who adapt to North Dakota by the Red River Valley.

I have been Kindle reading through Amazon as many as I can. I only had fours left for some of my selections and decided that if I could only read one; I would read the novel with Northfield location in the early 1900's. The plot seems to take place in the early days when there seemed to promises of telephones and electricity, and automobiles. A time when one would think they had little time to read. Ahhh, but that was not the case. They not only read but they studied and memorized. And some were students as the case of our Elisabeth.

The women of these novels are fantastic. They have become Doctors and Teachers and proprietors of wonderful stores. At the same time as a career they have wonderful husbands ans engage in so many social activities. It's a wonderful perspective of these Norwegian settlers and their children in this Red River region. [It's not the same as Jane Seymore on tv, who shared her medical career with us]
IN this case its the doctor Elisabeth whose romantic life unfolds as she pursues her medical career in the novel More Than A Dream. And at the same time were reminded of all the other members of her family that we have had the chance to know all about their lives in the other books of the series.

I'll See you later when I am not reading.arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-62384526914253752572009-05-09T21:27:00.000-07:002009-05-09T21:46:50.254-07:00Special Wedding Photo Genealogy treat for Mothers Day Isn't this a special treat. What we have here is a never before seen Wedding Photo of Herman and Annie. It seems to include the witnesses and Flower girls. This Photo is not enhanced. Perhaps on another day, I will. It locked up on me a moment ago.

Now who is everyone. I think that Herman's brother, Fred was a witness. I don't believe Fred was married then yet. And I think the other witness was one of his sisters. I hate to say with out checking first. If I recall correctly, I think both of his witnesses died shortly after.

Anyone recognize the faces in the photograph. Looking into the photo notice on the bottom right side a young blond. I bet she is Gertrude. I am not sure who it is on the left. I had not even imagined that she had flower girls in the wedding. How did she pick among her little sisters for that job. Perhaps just the youngest two.

I shall have to get out some dates of birth for her sisters and the exact date of this wedding to make this an accurate post.

I have also forgotten where I got this special Wedding photo?

For now enjoy this as it is.arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-28914766938343531222009-05-06T07:38:00.000-07:002009-05-06T08:11:46.028-07:00Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh Young Dwight with his Chick. I altered the picture. Somehow the alteration was too shiny for the picture. I tried to cover the bent part. I had the picture protected, but not enough. somehow it got bent in the envelope. Which I will regret to my dying day.

So unfortunately you see here with all it's noise and the scratch on the photo. Also, there is not enough contrast between Dwight's clothing and his chick. perhaps an easier way to fix scratches is to go to straight black and white. I do wish I had a good photo restoration program like I had before. [sigh]

You see here Dwight is slightly older than the last time you saw him with his chicks. He is still a successful farmer, just not as fanciful dressed.

And Now Dwight has selected a slightly Older chick.

I still love this photo the most though. I love the grass and his bare feet and that hat. Annie was definately going for a certain type of Photo result. I think she achieved it. It is adorable. Or they are adorable.

arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-15275903953804683962009-03-10T20:56:00.000-07:002009-03-10T23:23:43.159-07:00Air View - Photo of Sunnyslope Farm<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 276px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi8kJQrdHjrFCLUvlV7YNJm33YcbcXxYWSzQ8eMQQFrLL2WL4ExvhIAU1h5obc3CIRo4OEwXDdY7Uct1SP9VVw14KWDRZJiCqaUVXtX5cbMHZOAdwkiNPSr0gShvYcDbGZ1inM1ehFg2xp/s400/scan0012.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311775428204057314" />

Long gone now in this photo is the old victorian house, which held Herman and Annie's wing, and the August Seil's wing. Long gone too is the name as Sunnyslope Farm.

What we see here is the modern view of the current house, which was built about 1945-6 on the same spot that held the old house on the Sunnyslope Farm.

The View: Looking from East to the West at Sunnyslope was taken about 1979 or so. The chicken house seen in so many earlier photographs had by this time burned down to the cement. From our left to right we find the Hog building, which might be gone by now. We can see the newer buildings, the Cement Barn, and a Corn Crib.

On the front left next to the gravel road you see freshly plowed large dirt patches. The first one closest to the road was the family vegetable garden with a large strawberry Patch. The one above that was a fenced in area that was for calves and sheep in 1960's. Later it became another vegetable garden area. I was told that in the victorian years it had been a garden area for William and Annie Seil. But it seemed sandier and was less fertile than the other rich earth of the most eastern garden plot.

On the right side near the road, the plowed area had been cultivated and planted by Dwight, maybe the ten years or so before this photograph. For years in the 1950's and 1960's it was sheep pasture. They ran in and out of the woods until sheep farming was finished. In later years Dwight had decided to farm as much land as he could. Here too was the view that the neighbors the Mosels/Reeds saw from their windows.

Everything behind the large grove of trees was farming land. Except for the grassy pasture area on the left, beside the barn. This was grazing land for the dairy cows who waded and drank from a narrow shallow creek which ran below the sunnyslope of north and west slanted hills.

This farm acreage was one fourth of the square mile. Directly west behind the Meyer farm was The Slew. It was owned by the Game farm. They raised and released their pheasants in that area. On the right [north] side of the slew was the cultivated and planted farm land of Ben and Emma Johnson. And a bit north was the farm land of his son Fred Johnson with his wife Mabel.

On the east side of The Meyer farm was land at one time owned by Mary and Albert Kaizer. His farm was taken over later by Jerry Sill. His family lived on the east side of the gravel road. Eventually the gravel road reached the end of the square mile. If one reached this end, one could then turn onto Highway 60 [located north of the Sunnyslope Farm] .

If you came west on highway from Madelia, the family farm was about 6 - 7 traveling miles. If you went to St. James on this highway it was maybe about ten miles. Then coming from the south from Lewisville village on highway 15 or the blacktop road and then to gravel roads, it probably was about three or four miles.

I think I shall have to produce a small map soon of the local neighborhood.
Perhaps too, a small discussion on the neighbors, is in order.arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-49314330576415664392009-03-08T14:47:00.000-07:002009-03-10T23:49:54.897-07:00Casual Christmas day picture of some of the Meyers family.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 144px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheHtZi5R7W1PB0bRIzvwt8NBQ_KwJkO7KhP9-GX6DkeTyBQtSDiVbcmKnuxp9ZlRXaWWrwElKPu1xVM1jhQJujBtW7v_yfeJdA7cPsRuZ2M4bV4ReifU2llRMiGkzykVw6ecXP91DNoIeJ/s320/scan+Meyers+cropped.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310944762207464866" />
Left to right. Herman William, JoAn, Steve, [Grandpa] - Herman Henry. Here the Meyers are in the happy after glow of the Christmas celebration.

Looking at the picture, I wonder what Grandpa Herman was thinking while looking at something.

Before or after little Herman's acquisition of that basketball, a hoop for it was put up by the corn crib.

I suppose you thought little JoAnn would be wearing a holiday party frock. You got to love those coveralls of hers, which I can say, made her as colorful and festive as the Christmas tree.

I have always loved little Steve with his Daniel Boone coon skin hat in this picture. His grin is priceless.

Lyle, Amanda and Mary had visited the San Antonio, the city of the Alamo and brought back the Coon hat for Steve. I wonder if that is howcome the family had a Daniel Boone lamp. I'll have to show it to you sometime.

The children didn't always get much, and they rarely asked for a lot. So when they did get what they had wanted, or felt the love, it did bring pride to their faces. I guess, they didn't always know what other children were getting!

Someday, I will figure out what year this photo was taken. I'll have to ask the cousin to see, if she knows when they went to Texas. It must have been around 1958 or 1959.

just me joarootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-2609828226222352792009-02-11T11:48:00.000-08:002009-02-11T18:51:55.811-08:00Tuesday Time to Tell about Lyle<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 306px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqGq4dwmGKzQVrWTDUtt7BkDeCvxH7vu4Jz-tgtJptl8Z3F0nbf1BJk0wZbLjryk-lyemH030weBhJSimix-u69FzhnYpdJyLqtluidXxORc36BLYD1H4i2qy4cigX_v6dCPH9q-kMKj_5/s400/scan0034+Lyle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301629481351193426" />

And his friends. He was born on Feb. 8, 1918 to Herman Henry and Annie {Seil} Meyer. He was second born child.
The photograph has been behind glass, so it has suffered a little from that.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 203px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi31MYWpFz1r1Yx74FbZNpfRDBV7L-iSOA1Rs13GtLCZ20nK-li7fTGUU_3gvRZo8DZ5xH0wPHgCyjqTyZb-twIJ578l5XydPXPaKzUFhayPMF9JaApfStt18TUm8CuucimqUVAc_1c9G0D/s320/scan0025+Lyle+and+Dwight+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301004659167570770" />
Would you know the little one pictured there is Dwight. Or would you think he was a little girl. Sylvia always said that his mother had him looking like a little girl. But then too that was the style back then.

Dwight was Annies last baby and she gave him all the attention she could. In her later years she suffered from some kind of diabetes problems. So much so that she lost some of her leg. I am sure he felt his early loss of her most of his life. Though she was there for his formative years. Later after she was gone, he and his family had housekeepers.

I am not sure where they had the little pictures taken. Sylvia said he was spoiled so much that during early marriage years he still wanted to have a lot of fun. I think she spent a lot of time trying to keep him home. I am not sure exactly what that meant. But he must have had good fun with neighbors and friends from School in his youth.

Annie and his father were involved in the local school. In fact Dwight himself had to take over duties of the Fieldon Hall meetings. I remember he was secretary for a few years.
Minnesota Census indicated the lodger they had for a time was a teacher.
As a farmer he was a member of a creamery and other farm organizations. On weekends he would haul the cream to the creamery in Lewisville. He would take his children along and sometimes he stopped to see his brother, who ran a service station. When that happened he would leave behind his daughter to play with her cousin. Later he would pick up JoAnn or she would stay over night. Or he went to the pool hall. He played cards or observed others, who did. I am sure he was aware of little ears which had big eyes and big mouths, who would tell all about the visits to the pool hall.

Dwight and his wife, Sylvia played cards together and did this as they visted back and forth with neighbors and nearby relatives.

When Little Herman went before the draft board in the late 1960's he returned back by bus with his new friends. They stayed with Dwight and Sylvia nearly a year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 170px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQLJjDw87Cp32v9zyZ2oULZ15GnkZDAtZn4CEBcECql3tk1NFkj9Sk4RbKooS7yym1166lYdfggXGWFe5ul_Wm7dGQ539Ij1h9XcYqLzm9GUz_b9gQdbDJ6k3sMTqRC7MgnK9anozzT_uQ/s320/scan0043+Dwight+and+Sylvia.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301258017545920418" />

In the 1960's Sylvia and Dwight liked to Help the newly married couples out, whenever they could.
Pictured here was Glen husband to Judy who was probably taking the picture. Originally friends of young Herman. In fact Sylvia and Dwight considered the possibility of taking care of their daughter Glenda. That is a long story.

Nearly about the same time maybe for a year or two before their nephew Jerry and his freind, who went to Vietnam came by to stay too.

Their home was always welcoming to everyone.

People knew when work time occured and visited accordingly. Here we see Dwight in his work attire. He liked them for all his heavy duty farm work. I don't think he liked a tight belt and and pants. I am not sure if I ever saw him in Blue Jeans.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 218px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiukZgEBkftcv0ANF_VN_EGOuQw7cbxWw4eLQfyaCc29f88_GEb9Xc4XkLockylEmtZdFv1Bp_Ekmb0Bd2z-5XYoPuoApxWBo4N680tUULpZ_byx3Bzf-S22MQCJ1BArfTBx0lqQIpjpqPe/s320/scan0043+overall+D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301021717291031970" />
He is pictured here in very later years going along the sidewalk which seems to be cracked there. In 1970's Sylvia convinced Dwight to remove the deep raspberry red Rose and Bridal wreaths there which faced the driveway. The rose went to a spot across the driveway near the chicken house. I think the Bridal Wreath bush disappeared. Sylvia developed her big flower bed. For many years in the 50's and sixty's that space was shaded by a huge maple which was east of this new patch of garden along the driveway. It was cut down sometime in the late sixties. You can see it was a long driveway. Lined on the north side with evergreen and big maples on the south side of the driveway. On the other side of the maples was the lawn and fishpond which were original plans of landscape by his ancestors still intact. I am sure Dwight would never have considered altering it in anyway. He did add apples at the east most end by the gravel county road which ran by the farm place. He had supported his sons' efforts to sell for FFA by buying the trees and other merchandise that his son sold over the years.

They still had their strawberry patch and big garden futher southeast of the house.

Dwight would help pick strawberries and vegetables. He didn't help pull weeds out of her flowers all that much because he had the big vegetable garden to weed. He helped by hauling her piles of weeds away. Or bringing in a little topdressing for her beds.

He had milking chores and often after his father had passed he did help Sylvia the pick up the eggs under the chickens. Egg cleaning with automatic egg cleaner washer. Feed the chickens, and prep for the cleaning of the chickens. Though their children helped with that, unless they were old enough to take care of their own animals and feed his for FFA or able to drive the tractors in the fields. Since Sylvia did not drive he helped deliver the chickens, once they were cleaned.

When time was crucial in the fields especially during haying, the children brought lunch to their dad in the fields. I have often wondered if it was her way to get the kids out of her hair for a few minutes. Because once there they usually stayed to do something or found something to do on the way back.

Dwight also supported his wifes efforts with her quilting. During the long winter months as they were retired empty nesters he would help her cut her quilt blocks. And when the time came he would help her set up her quilt racks for the tieing of the quilts.

This last picture could have been taken when Dwight had developed alzheimers.arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-33732344259228391142009-02-02T08:05:00.000-08:002009-02-02T11:21:30.590-08:00Monday's Memories - Steve<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 98px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSICtLj2lAUfK03JEmjY1_xvFyJMj7IPGbVqXsvyOZHkWQvgWIZIe5ecTUjnriz2j4I5fHMC9g43CDVcEviC0vDv0DDOE-Hy6N9Ai7SCKodGlT_NY_aXjdHq6tb9QyFGSHycIr7nNzZXVX/s200/clearcut+M.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298266848860827586" />ondays'<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 98px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSICtLj2lAUfK03JEmjY1_xvFyJMj7IPGbVqXsvyOZHkWQvgWIZIe5ecTUjnriz2j4I5fHMC9g43CDVcEviC0vDv0DDOE-Hy6N9Ai7SCKodGlT_NY_aXjdHq6tb9QyFGSHycIr7nNzZXVX/s200/clearcut+M.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298266848860827586" />emories !

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 184px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvJyvD_J4QFYYr628AdMUbHqo3Exc_4cGWeVotII0q9kvoHrYEzC2JUaHJwrsoo0-CpQ7FipmAQzyStXFCenYCgPp393WUAMZL0P1n6IkW5Ys3i03rAHwLQe4bXjAvf03bcnS9Bv5QE6az/s320/scan0009+Steve+Life+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298233333358473026" />
Our person today you see for Monday Memories is

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 91px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbLXote9jRDY9vWyvH1YJ7AApzTeMZ-GYcnVIXvCTtWEYlwkKcQI8RfP7MBUpHG8HDSDQL2p45mrv7y6l3LqkWWAHqM18CTdbN8qBxF5J9gP524YyATGNj5vMUtsmVKaod0dqfEmfr9gtJ/s200/baileys+S.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298265675433623010" />teve Meyer. A almost unbelievable thing happened after Dorothy O. Rowe's mother died nine days after her birth. Gertrude Jaeschke walked in and just took baby Dorothy O. Rowe. William and his wife Dorothy Meyer were living in St James or Fairmont at this time about 1928 or 1929. They were raising the two older sons of Roscoe and Mabel Rowe. According to Christi Chance, Grandmother Dorothy Meyer had been dealing with her own Illness and one of the older Rowe brothers was sick as well. I have been following the census of Mn and Iowa. On and off Gertrude was staying with Herman and Annie (Seil) Meyer at Sunnyslope Farm. My mother said that she met C. F. Leonard while living in Minnesota. She is married at age 21 and living with him in Iowa state census of 1925. The census cites her and her husband living with August H. Jaeschke, her brother, at Reading [district], Farnhamville [town], Calhoun county Iowa. [Later she also lived at Rockwell City in Iowa.] Gertrude JAESCHKE LEONARD pictured below.

I am going to add a little interesting tidbit to this story. I found that Dorothy O. Rowe's name was mentioned as beneficiary of Annie (Seil) Meyer's insurance papers. Somewhere along the line of my investigation into the name and Herman H. Meyer role; I learned that he was godparent to Dorothy O Rowe. I gathered that that is why Annie and Herman developed more than a passing sympathetic interest in little Dorothy. I am sure Gertrude, and Annie had heart felt feelings about poor little Dorothy whose grandparents couldn't take her in. They had lost their real mother and both of them were raised by August W. SEIL. Annie was completely raised by her Grandfather and his new wife Anna VOGEL.. When Annie Meyer died 24.May 1936 from complications of her Diabetes, Dorothy still did not get her money until she was eighteen or twenty one. I hope at least she got the interest of the invested sum as well. Dorothy graduated from High School at Rockwell city In 1945. In 1949 she graduated from Nurses training.

Christi Chance, this families record keeper, did a good job on these scans. She sent me these, when she found me back in 2001 at the message boards on Ancestry.com and Roots Web. I had just started into Genealogy with nothing on my family. She gave me a good starting point. I would not be nearly where I am today without her help.

Well, while giving credit where it is due, I shall say Verl Matthews too has been a big help.

I would like to especially thank Jerry Cummings for his contribution of personal Information he had on the Cummings / Rowe family. Jerry Cummings was named after Gerald Cummings. He graciously sent me some information on the family all the way from Belgium. I hope to Post that soon.

Okay, I admit it, it wasn't Wordless Wednesday after all. Now tell the truth, did you really think it would be?!

Note: Document Information from Meyer book written by Jean Delores Wieland Everhart. Information was also contributed by many families over a nine year time span.

Note: Documents of Dorothy Cumming's obituaries are online newspapers.
Note to self: Find out when exactly Gertrude took Dorothy. and If she legally adopted her. Find document of Gertrude's marriage and if divorde to Leonard. Find document, if possible of her getting the Insurance Money.Find and copy obituary. Stay and have a little lunch. That might mean a few sandwiches or cookies and Ice cream. Sometimes jello. Coffee or koolaid. I am not sure where the habit started. But guests could not leave until lunch was served. Especially on a sunday, when anyone came calling. Of course during the week, if you were Fred Kaiser down the road or someone else who really did have only a few minutes, you stayed in the car. And we would talk to you through the window.

After lunch and it was time to go, you get walked to the door and to your car and we stand and talk some more. And then finaly off you go. Waves and then after you were down the driveway for a bit, we would then go into the house.

Then on a certain day during the week, the lady of the house got a call to see, if there was any visiting news. If you got out of your car [lol] you were mentioned in the newspaper local column. Mr and Mrs Meyer had visitors Emma and Ben Johnson. Or Mr and Mrs Meyer visited the Fred Johnson home. It is a gold mine to find columns of news like that in the old local newspapers. You get to see what associations they had.

Return visits were expected.

Thats how it was. Back in the fifties, sixties at Sunnyslope farm.

So sit down comfy like, have a little lunch and stay awhile. I picked up this good receipe for A nice Carmel Apple Spice drink last month. Mostly though, I wanted you to see what I think of as a resemblance to the Mystery gentleman. However, the Schlaphofs did live in Cass county, Nebraska. But they did have many branches of the Schlaphof family in Martin county Minnesota.

You can easily find the Schlaphoff/ Schlaphof family tree at ancestry.com. He may have been grooming his sheep. Or learning how to pose his animal. Or maybe Annie said she wanted a picture of him with his Lamb. I have seen through various pictures that she encouraged her boys in their activities in the 4-h club. I think too, that she must have been a good 4-H Leader. I am sure she guided her boys to do a good job in each of their interests.

The lad must be thinking his sheep will win ribbons at the fair. Dwight had quite a few ribbons in his collection box. He kept it up on the second floor of that old red barn you see behind the tyke and his sheep.

I am not sure who the lad is. It could be Lyle or Dwight. the little boy is grabbing at the sheep with his left hand, that could mean hand preferance . That might be something to point to Dwight. Dwight was left handed.

I don't know how many sheep Herman Meyer had on the Sunnyslope farm. I had gathered over the years that the raising of sheep was something special to Herman. I mean it was special to him because of his descendency from a shepherd. Johann Juergen Meyer of Neetzendorf -- [ And Radenbeck. ] Even some of the Luhmann family were shepherds.

After Dwight more or less took over the farm after Herman was retired, he kept on raising sheep. Raising sheep took less work than raising a dairy herd. But after a time he sold them all. Maybe there was a decline in the wool industry.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 144px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi326HyF-JFFNVyY1NsM6ExqmXfeT7ERSz3vsp5Y52ar1VAQbBfIWgVaF6ksbblim7BQrwLrTcw9ryCu7VfuNlpvx-4sCCOL1fvLdDELhV0apDlkxIUA3kXY4gYEu0e2qKBtY4tpP_00YLN/s200/scan0003+SHEEP.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287877657152102290" />

Over heard conversation leads me to conclude that this breed of sheep was a diferent variety than those of the normal farmer in the area. I couldn't say for sure what the breed was. I don't know either, if they ever mixed or changed variety of sheep breeds. You know how it is, unles the interest is there one just does not notice.

I had a pet sheep myself from their flock. His mamma didn't want him, so we had to feed him and raise him from a bottle. But I can't remember what kind of face he had. White or black. I will have to see if, I can find an old picture of Blackie. Tee hee. [ The name should tell me something, right?]

I was a little disappointed, when he took to butting. But well, I am sure I deserved it. Okay, I did try to ride him when I was little. I know shame on me. [About that time Steven Meyer was sitting on top of his huge cow that he had raised from a calf, so I must have thought it looked like a good idea.]come on were not the first group of children to do such a thing.

The 4- h club or his experience from raising them must have taught Dwight alot about sheep. He did a good job with helping me raise Blackie. Herman offered advice now and then.

It would have been nice if Annie had lived longer to help me too.
With her around, I bet I would have been in the 4-h club. I was never in it. Sylvia had considered it when the opportunity rose. The decision was somehow made not to have the family be active in it. There was always more important farm work to be done.

You know, I have no idea what kinds of sheep there are around the world. I should check on that someday. I guess that would be a good rainy day cruise on the internet.. I 'll have to see what I can find out about the breeds of sheep. I will let you know if anything pertains to the sheep raising at Sunny slope.

Now I see Little Women in the black and white version is on tv. I can't pass that up. I will be back later. Enjoy your evening.arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-76815432024502415902008-07-18T19:27:00.000-07:002008-09-17T20:58:13.642-07:00Well attired successful farmers with their chicks

A properly attired man doing his job.
Cheep, cheep, cheep. But it kept reverting back. Maybe I can try again another day. It is such a keeper.

I have been wondering what that little house is off to his right. It could be his chick house or play shed for his toys.

His mother sure knew how she could raise a farmer. You gotta love her attention and love for her children. I think this is Dwight. No kidding, but my thoushts were I wonder if the foremost idea was to take a picture of the plants and then as an after thought, she added in the children. Do you think? I know I have done that. Does that make me a bad mother. And sometimes you know how children are, some are such little Hams. It's impossible to take a picture with out them wandering in and hamming it up. Where ever they stand, it makes a bad picture. The back of them or whatever they are doing is out of sync with the picture, I want to take. So sometimes it is just best to have them sit and pose.

The little darling here is being really good, isn't she?.arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-19837588767716815272008-07-18T13:23:00.000-07:002008-08-13T21:09:40.699-07:00Home at Sunnyslope FarmIts easy to see that it is cool and refreshing at breaktime at the Sunnyslope Farm. It was taken when Dwight and Lyle Meyer were young. Probably sometimes after 1925. Here you see them with the neighborhood gang. I think this is the west side of the old house. But I could be wrong.

I can only guess who they could be. Perhaps Mosel, McMullen, maybe Tierney?

arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439866391355893642.post-25666816416586916092008-07-14T06:57:00.000-07:002009-03-11T00:11:57.585-07:00Life of Work Mixed In With Fun AT SUNNYSLOPE<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 294px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ZDrG8sDGsGavG4b5BOWTcLYYSb6imm1FG4VykcLHt4FKrp-mgj9lisFSXdm3WbgZvnT6piC05Dvs_iiamGMIrwLtZVC8H_zzliBhgs8dgOUzggI1T5nqAQCw56r0mk8tSzBwbuqhqbDY/s400/scan0032+Horse+riders.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311820691800885874" />

For the Horses?
I am not sure who the riders are in this photograph. And it doesn't matter. The work horses that I remember they had on the farm in 1950's were called Jack and Joe. Sometime in 1950's they moved on to tractors. It was a big deal. Great Progress for them, because others in the neighborhood had already done so.

Mabel Johnson to the North West of Sunnyslope was into horses for riding. I don't know, if Fred was as a youngster. Also the Kelseys had horses for riding. I couldn't say who the mystery riders were. Possibly Meyer.

Note: I haven't dated the photo, yet, either. I am sorry it is a bit blurry. I have found a picture online that is much better than the close up picture, that I took with my camera. So here is the link to the stamped mark that I found on the bottom of the vase, which was in the Meyer cupboard. It is listed below the number 8 of 18.
Some description and examples here. Very gorgeous.

The stamped mark at the bottom is most like this one below. And the vase itself carries the basic design of the stamped design. In the others the curved lines are boaxed in or inclosed. In. this stamp it is not.

Notice the variety of that stamp. The closed boxyness of the design and the open swirl or swag of the design. I noticed also the boxy design has a stamp with a sideways v. Gosh what gorgeous dishes shown. I do have some very chipped sugar and creamers that might fit in here. I shall have to check on their stamp at a future date. I think it is my fault they got chipped. So gorgeous.

The others are so pretty with flowers and all. This vase is just a dark gray blue in nearly the same design as the insignia. I have not found the same vase on line yet.

The Mz Austria(1891-1913) marked on the bottom shown to be Moritz Zdekauer. He [Moritz Zdekauer] in 1884 purchased a factory in Altrohlau, Bohemia. The letters MZ have been maintained in the logo ever since, and still today at factory building. By1909 the factory was sold to C.M. Hutschenreuter [ the Hohenberg, Germany porcelain manufacturer] became the owner, and named it Altrohlau Porcelain Factories ... MZ Austria existed and depicts an era at the end of WWI. "By 1918 the Paris Peace Committee had created a new country" Bohemia became Czechoslovakia.

My research here has shown that it is from Bohemia, Austria. Which is fitting for it to be Anna Fogel or Vogel Seil. Czech Republic, Králický or Grulich [ hope that is spelled correctly for now.] I have not located the village on the map yet. It is a bit North on Polish border. I do know that Bohemia in Anna's home area to be now Czechoslovakia. I think she immigrated after 1900. I shall have to check records to be sure. I often confuse Greene county with Calhoun county, when I have to figure out, which one she lived in. So, I will have to refer back to records. But I believe it was Greene county, Iowa. I guess it depends on if she was living with August or with the Vogels.

The last time I used the image/ link in putting image from website on internet; I got a incomplete box. So I know better than to take census from the internet onto this blog at this time. I will edit the year, she immigrated in here. Some of the family lived in Illinois before moving to Iowa. August Seil was friends with Frank Vogel, before he married Anna. [Family of Joseph Vogel].

The Seil family, Annie and August William came from Dahlenburg. Annies mothers family the Korns and Coleman, Schmidt came from Gross Thondorf and Hildesheim.

We are not sure exactly where on the census the Vogel family lived in Illinois. I may have found it, I am not totally sure. I keep trying. As I try to find the Dohrmann family as well. No luck.arootdigger2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07064537839731995421noreply@blogger.com2
